*Use either different coloured grated chocolate, OR crayon sharpenings:
-grate - to show formation of sedimentary (and some pressure)
-Pressure (in foil and sit on - maybe use a bit of warmth - to show formation of metamorphic
-melt and pour to show formation of igneous

*Ask children to remind you of the rock types and characteristics
*Now get children to suggest which rock type might be used more often for: carving easily, high wear areas, strong buildings etc
*Children to investigate rock samples and group into possible uses
*During plenary, identify names and uses of some common rocks

To group rocks by hardness - using Moh's Harness Tests
|
Instruction and differentiated activities:
*Recap on three types of rocks and their characteristics
*Introduce Moh's hardness indicators -as a way of grouping rocks by hardness (spend time on this - children find it difficult)
*Children perform Moh's hardness tests on a range of rock samples - ask children to rank samples in order of relative hardness
*In the plenary, use sentence frames and encourage use of scientific words and full sentences to explain findings
